Strong encryption algorithms.

We’ve implemented AES-256 bit encryption with PBKDF2 SHA-256 and salted hashes to ensure complete security in the cloud. You’ll create a password manager account with an email address and a strong master password to locally-generate a unique encryption key.

Local-only encryption

Your data is encrypted and decrypted at the device level. Data stored in your vault is kept secret, even from LastPass. Your master password, and the keys used to encrypt and decrypt data, are never sent to LastPass’ servers, and are never accessible by LastPass.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

LastPass is a secure password manager that stores all of your usernames and passwords in one safe place called a Vault. After you save a password to your Vault, LastPass always remembers it for you. When you need to log in to a website, LastPass enters your username and password for you!

A password manager does many other things, including:

  • Creating new passwords for you
  • Showing how strong your passwords are
  • Storing information such as PIN codes and membership IDs
  • Sharing passwords with others
  • Filling out addresses and credit card forms

The most secure passwords are randomly generated, and LastPass can be used to both store and generate them. It is recommended to use generated passwords as much as possible as a security best practice. You can also use the Auto Change feature (displayed only for supported websites) to update your stored passwords with a single click.

  1. In your web browser toolbar, click the inactive LastPass icon .
  2. Enter your username and Master Password, then click Log In.
  3. If prompted, complete steps for Multifactor Authentication (if it is enabled on your account).

  4. Navigate to a website for which you'd like to generate a new secure password. Or, if you want to change the password for a site with one that is generated by LastPass, log in to your desired site and access your account's login settings.
  5. Generate a secure password by doing any of the following:
    • Using the in-field icon – Click the Generate Password icon  in the Password field.
    • Using the web browser extension – Click the LastPass icon LastPass then click Generate Secure Password.
    • From within your Vault – Click the LastPass icon LastPass then select Open my Vault. In the left navigation, go to More options Advanced Generate Secure Password.
  6. If desired, you can customize your password settings, which will create a new password based on your selections. Select Show Options (if using the in-field icon), otherwise you can choose from the following options:
    • Slide the marker to select your desired Password length (or type a number in the text field) – up to 100 characters max
    • Easy to say – Does not include numbers or special characters
    • Easy to read – Does not include ambiguous characters (I vs. l, O vs. 0)
    • All characters – Includes any type of character
  7. Additionally, you can:
    • Copy  to copy the new password to your clipboard
    • Generate New  to create a new secure password
    • Show History to see previously generated passwords
  8. Once your selections have been made, click Fill Password (or Copy Password, if you are generating from within your Vault).
  9. When prompted in the upper-right navigation, click Add (to add a new set of credentials) or Update (to update an existing set of credentials) with your newly generated secure password.
  10. Once added, it is recommended that you log out and log back in with the newly generated secure password.

The Master Password to your LastPass account allows access to everything in your account: all of your Sites, Form Fills, Secure Notes, and more. There is no limit for the character length of the Master Password, but it is recommended that you use at least 12 characters and make sure it is memorable.

  1. Log in to LastPass and access your Vault by doing either of the following:
    • Go to https://lastpass.com/?ac=1 and Log in with your username and Master Password.
    • In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon LastPass then click Open My Vault.
  2. Select Account Settings in the left navigation.
  3. On the General tab under Login Credentials, click Change Master Password.
  4. In the new web browser page or tab that opens, enter your current password, then create a new Master Password. Enter a password hint (recommended – this is a clue that is sent in a reminder email to help you remember your Master Password if it is ever forgotten).
  5. When finished, click Save Master Password to save your changes.
  6. Once updated, you will need to click the inactive LastPass icon  to log in once more to authenticate using your new Master Password.

How do I enable autologin for sites?

You can enable automatic login (autologin) for specific sites for which you have stored login information and want LastPass to automatically log you into that site when it is visited.

  1. Log in to LastPass and access your Vault by doing either of the following:
    • Go to https://lastpass.com/?ac=1 and log in with your username and Master Password.
    • In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon LastPass then click Open My Vault.
  2. Click Sites in the left menu.
  3. Find the relevant Site in the center section of the screen, then hover over it and click the Edit icon .
  4. Under the Advanced Settings section, check the box for the Autologin option (it is not already selected) then click Save.
