    The YubiKey is a device that makes two-factor authentication as simple as possible. Instead of a code being texted to you, or generated by an app on your phone, you press a button on your YubiKey. That's it. Each device has a unique code built on to it, which is used to generate codes that help confirm your identity.

    Ever since Google told the world that none of its 85,000 employees had been able to hacked since they started implementing Security Keys, like Yubico's YubiKey, I've been contacted by friends and the media about my thoughts.

    Hardware-based 2FA security

    The YubiKey 5 NFC ($45) is a thin but sturdy device that fits in a standard USB Type-A port and also supports NFC connections. ... The Yubikey devices I tested support hundreds of services that use a handful of standards, including FIDO2 Web Authentication (WebAuthn).

    To take advantage of this new, advanced security feature, you will need to simply register your FIDO2-enabled YubiKey 5 Series or Security Key by Yubico with your Microsoft account. This feature is available on any Windows PC with the Windows 10 version 1809 update and Microsoft Edge installed.

    When a YubiKey is lost, to regain access to the system, the administrator has to provide a mechanism for users to associate a new YubiKey, or at least temporarily disable two-factor authentication.
